About the Ed in Club Ed:

Since 1991, Ed has been the head surfing instructor for the UCSC Surfing Program. Knowledge and expertise has earned him the honorary title of 'Professor of Surfing". Ed has solid experience teaching water sports. He was the Outdoor Recreation program Director at Fort Ord for 7 years and coached a winning Army surf team. He is also a winning competitor in local surf competitions. Since 1989, he has shaped and designed surfboards for Pearson Arrow Surfboards in Santa Cruz.

Ed has devoted himself to surfing since 1969. His surfing ventures have taken him to Australia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Samoa, Indonesia, Chile, Hawaii, Baja and the Philippines. Ed's specialty is intimate knowledge of the local waves.

Your Coaches:

Each Club Ed surf coach is a qualified professional. They are carefully selected, experienced instructors and experts in surfing. Most hold certifications in CPR, Life-Saving and First Aid. Each coach receives ongoing training not only in surfing but in teaching and learning theory and methods. They understand that "you won't care how much they know until YOU know they care". This is the Club Ed difference They are genuinely interested in your goals and concerns. Their priorities are Safety, Fun, and Learning. In that order!

Learn to Surf the Right Way:

The beginner lesson includes the equipment you'll need. The surf site is determined by your coach to optimize your safety, fun and learning. Once suited up and given your board, you'll join your coach for an on the beach class that covers safety, right-of-way, and surf etiquette, surf break awareness, paddling skills, how to push through waves, stand up techniques, stance, riding and more.

Then you hit the water! Now's the time to put all you've learned into action. You're sitting in the line-up with your friends. a wave rolls in and your coach gives you the signal to turn and start paddling. You pick up speed as the wave swells under your board and then you rise to your feet! You're cruising toward shore on a peeling wave and it feels like your whole body is smiling! What a rush! You paddle back out to the lineup, eager for more.

You'll have time to practice under the watchful eye of your coach. They make sure you get individual instruction and feedback. Follow-up lessons are available at reduced rates:
